A good in-ground pool maintenance checklist is less about doing one big cleanup and more about catching small changes before they become expensive problems. Clear water alone is not enough. A healthy residential pool also needs reliable circulation, balanced water, a clean filter, sound surfaces, and safety equipment that is ready to use.
This guide covers the routine a U.S. homeowner can reasonably handle while showing where to stop and call a qualified pool professional. Always follow the instructions on your chemical labels and equipment manuals. They take priority over general guidance.
Why Regular In-Ground Pool Maintenance Matters
In-ground pools combine water chemistry, hydraulics, electrical equipment, finishes, and outdoor structures. A change in one part of the system often shows up somewhere else. Low water can interrupt skimming. A dirty filter can reduce circulation. Unbalanced water can damage a plaster finish or shorten equipment life. A small leak can undermine soil around buried plumbing or the pool shell.
Pool construction matters, too:
- Plaster or exposed-aggregate pools: Watch for roughness, staining, scaling, cracks, or areas that sound hollow. Use brushes and chemistry practices approved for the finish.
- Fiberglass pools: Use nonabrasive tools and inspect the gelcoat for discoloration, blistering, or surface damage.
- Vinyl-lined in-ground pools: Use a liner-safe brush and vacuum head. Look for wrinkles, fading, tears, and water loss. Avoid sharp tools and aggressive brushing.
Keep a simple log of test results, filter pressure, water additions, cleaning, and unusual observations. The pattern over time is often more useful than a single reading.
Weekly In-Ground Pool Maintenance Checklist
1. Start with a visual safety check
- Confirm the water is clear enough to see the floor and main-drain area.
- Check that drain covers appear secure and undamaged. Do not swim if a cover is missing, loose, broken, or not visible.
- Inspect ladders and handrails for movement, sharp edges, or corrosion.
- Verify gates, fences, alarms, covers, rescue equipment, and other required barriers are working.
- Remove toys and trip hazards from the deck when the pool is not in use.
Do not attempt underwater drain-cover, entrapment-protection, bonding, or structural repairs yourself. Close the pool and contact a qualified professional.
2. Test sanitizer and pH
Use a reliable drop-based kit or another test method recommended for your system. The CDC recommends a pH of 7.0 to 7.8 and at least 1 ppm free chlorine in a pool, or at least 2 ppm when cyanuric acid or stabilized chlorine is used. It also recommends checking chlorine and pH at least twice a day, and more often during heavy use.[1] Those are public-health minimums; the product label, local rules, and your pool professional may call for a narrower operating range.
A weekly maintenance day is useful for a full set of tests, but sanitizer and pH should be checked more often whenever the pool is open. Test after storms, large gatherings, visible contamination, or major water additions.
- Follow every product label exactly.
- Never mix pool chemicals with each other or with household cleaners.
- Add products in the label-specified order and location.
- Store chemicals in their original containers, dry, ventilated, secured, and separated from incompatible products.[2]
- Keep children and pets away from chemicals and dosing areas.
3. Skim, brush, and vacuum
- Skim leaves, insects, pollen, and other floating debris.
- Brush walls, steps, benches, corners, and low-circulation areas with a tool approved for your finish.
- Vacuum the floor or run the automatic cleaner according to its manual.
- Inspect cleaner hoses, cables, tracks, bags, and brushes for wear.
Pay extra attention to behind ladders, below returns, at the waterline, and around attached-spa spillways. An automatic cleaner helps, but it does not replace brushing and visual inspection.
4. Check water level and circulation
Keep the water at the level recommended by the pool builder or skimmer manufacturer, commonly around the middle of the skimmer opening. Low water can pull air into the system; high water can weaken surface skimming.
- Confirm return jets have steady flow.
- Look through the pump lid for unusual air or loss of prime.
- Listen for new grinding, rattling, or high-pitched sounds.
- Check the equipment pad and visible plumbing for drips or wet soil.
- Make sure skimmer weirs move freely and baskets are not overloaded.
Multiple pumps, in-floor cleaning systems, attached spas, fountains, solar systems, and complex valve layouts need a written operating plan. If you are unsure which valve controls a line, do not experiment while the system is running.
5. Empty baskets safely
Turn the pump off before opening a pump strainer or removing a basket as required by the equipment manual. Empty skimmer and pump baskets, inspect them for cracks, reinstall them correctly, and make sure lids and O-rings are clean and seated. Never reach into a suction opening while the system is operating.
6. Read the filter pressure
Record the pressure after the filter is clean and operating normally. Compare future readings with that baseline and follow the filter manufacturer's cleaning threshold. A pressure change may indicate a dirty filter, blocked line, closed valve, air leak, or circulation problem.
Before any filter service, shut off power, prevent restart, close or position valves as the manual requires, and release internal pressure through the approved air-relief procedure. Never stand over a filter while it is pressurized. Damaged clamps, tanks, gauges, valves, or air-relief assemblies require professional service.
Monthly Equipment and Structure Checks
Pump, filter, heater, and saltwater equipment
- Inspect visible unions, valves, seals, and plumbing for moisture or mineral deposits.
- Clean or backwash the filter only as its manufacturer directs.
- Check the equipment area for blocked ventilation, pests, corrosion, or stored chemicals.
- Inspect the heater cabinet and exhaust area visually. Do not open gas or electrical compartments.
- For a saltwater chlorine generator, inspect the controller and cell only according to the manufacturer's instructions. Do not scrape plates or use an acid solution unless the manual specifically directs it.
- Review timer or automation schedules after power outages and seasonal time changes.
Burner service, gas odor, soot, recurring ignition errors, electrical faults, damaged conduit, tripping breakers, hot wiring, bonding concerns, or unexplained equipment shutdowns require a licensed or qualified service provider.
Tile, coping, deck, and expansion joints
- Look for loose tile, missing grout, cracked coping, sharp edges, or movement.
- Inspect the expansion joint between the pool and deck for gaps or failed sealant.
- Keep deck drains open and direct runoff away from the pool.
- Watch for settlement, standing water, or widening cracks.
Cosmetic hairline changes can be monitored, but moving coping, shell cracks, persistent water loss, deck settlement, or suspected underground leaks should be evaluated promptly by a professional.
Attached spa
An attached spa can share equipment with the pool but still develop different circulation and sanitizer conditions. Check jets, suction fittings, spillways, air controls, and water temperature. Follow the heater and automation manuals before changing spa mode. Never allow suction outlets to operate with damaged or missing covers.
Seasonal In-Ground Pool Maintenance
Spring opening
- Remove standing water and debris from the cover safely.
- Inspect the pool, cover anchors, deck, equipment, and exposed plumbing before startup.
- Reinstall plugs, fittings, baskets, gauges, and accessories according to the closing records and manuals.
- Have a professional address freeze damage, damaged wiring, gas equipment, or unknown valve positions.
- Fill to the correct level, start circulation, check for leaks, and balance water using test results and labels.
Peak swimming season
Increase testing, skimming, and basket cleaning when temperatures, bather load, pollen, or storms increase. Verify the pump schedule still provides effective skimming and filtration without assuming that longer is always better. Use water clarity, test results, equipment guidance, and actual debris load to adjust the routine.
Fall and winter
Remove leaves before they sink. In freezing climates, winterization must account for every return, skimmer, main-drain system, water feature, heater, sanitizer, cleaner line, spa line, and auxiliary pump. Improper blowing, plugging, or antifreeze use can damage equipment or create a safety hazard. If the plumbing layout is not fully documented, hire a qualified closing service.
Do not drain an in-ground pool without professional direction. Groundwater pressure can damage or lift a shell, and vinyl liners can shift or shrink.

- Opening a pressurized filter: A filter tank can release stored energy violently.

How often should an in-ground pool be maintained?
Do a quick visual, sanitizer, and pH check whenever the pool is open, with a complete cleaning and equipment review at least weekly. The exact frequency should increase with hot weather, storms, debris, or heavy use. PHTA and Trouble Free Pool both recommend a repeatable schedule that includes water testing, surface cleaning, brushing, basket care, and filter monitoring.[3][4]
What should normal filter pressure be?
There is no universal number. Record the gauge reading when your specific filter is clean and operating normally, then follow the manufacturer's instructions for when to clean or backwash. A sudden rise or drop deserves investigation.
Can I service a pool filter myself?
Routine cleaning may be appropriate if you understand the manual and can shut down, isolate, and fully depressurize the system. Do not open a filter that is running or pressurized. Damaged tanks, clamps, valves, gauges, or relief assemblies need professional service.
How can I tell whether my pool is leaking?
Track water additions and compare them with weather and splash-out.
